The world has been explored since the 16th century, and from that time worldly objects have been collected and researched. Unknown worlds were explored with great enthusiasm. People were amazed at the exotic flora and fauna, curious customs, beliefs, artifacts from these unknown areas. The world suddenly turned out to be so much bigger than people thought. No wonder people wanted to know more about it. No wonder there was a need for clarity and overview. In order to get a grip on the big world, people wanted it in manageable form. They created ‘a world in miniature’ at home and the great thing was that everyone could interpret this in their own appropriate way. In other words, the Wunderkammer.
